Information

This match is arguably a top 10 of all time in all the state championships' history. Flamengo needs a 2-goal differential win to be champion of the Rio de Janeiro state championship for the third time in a row (in 1999 and 2000, Flamengo defeated Vasco da Gama in the finals) and will play without WC and Paraguayan legend Carlos Gamarra. The "Rubro-Negro" will rely on Serbian maestro Dejan Petković (one of the best foreigners that ever played in Brazil), Edílson "Capetinha" ("The Little Devil", 2002 WC Brazil national team member), Beto (a regular Brazil national team member in the late 1990s/early 2000s) and youngsters and future legends like Juan (2006 and 2010 WC national team starter) and Júlio César (2006 WC member and 2010 and 2014 Brazil National Team starter). Vasco da Gama is playing without the genius Romário but they have Juninho Paulista (one of the best players in the world in the mid/late 1990s and a 2002 WC Brazil national team starter), Euller "O Filho do Vento" ("The Son of the Wind", a regular Brazil national team member in the turn of the century), Viola (a 1994 WC Brazil National team member), Pedrinho (one of the greatest Brazilian prospects in the late 1990s), and Hélton (one of the greatest goalkeepers in Vasco's history). Great players, a great rivalry and a "football temple" (Maracanã), perfect ingredients for a classic match.
