El Spartak de Moscú tenía un equipo buenísimo, destacando Shalimov, que ya había jugado el mundial de Italia, y dos jóvenes promesas que años más tarde coincidirían en el Celta de Vigo. El dominio de los rusos era total en los primeros 15 minutos, con destellos de Mostovoi, algo individualista. A partir de ahí, el Sparta de Praga lo intentaba en contragolpes, sistema 5-3-2 frente al 4-2-3-1 de los soviéticos. Cerny más peligroso, y Kukleta, fallecido en 2011, ex del Betis (como Bilek), mostraban que los checos echaban de menos a Skuhravy, estrella de Italia 90. El gol de Shalimov desde fuera del área hacía justicia a lo visto en el terreno de juego. La segunda parte empezó de la misma manera y solo al final del partido el Sparta de Praga intentó tirar más adelante, sin conseguirlo.
