Match très physique avec deux équipes combattantes au contact et à la possession. La République d'Irlande manque le coche en première mi-temps avec une occasion immanquable. Leur seconde mi-temps n'est qu'un immuable repli sur les buts de l'excellent Pat Bonner. Mais face à l'armada néerlandaise, cela devait craquer. Toutefois le but de Kieft est bien chanceux avec ce tir dévissé de Ronald Koeman complètement raté. La chance des vainqueurs...
