Lobanovskiy totally failed with his tactics in this particular match. The Soviet team played with only three at the back, two fullbacks and a sweeper, while the natural central defender Kuznetsov was positioned in midfield alongside Aleinikov and Zygmantovich. The idea obviously was to win by blocking the zone in which Maradona operated. This experimental set up left enormous unprotected spaces in the Soviet defensive line, especially when one of the three defenders ran forward to start an attack.
I'll admit I've never learned Russian, but this commentator seems a bit dry. Even when Pumpido shattered his leg, the man's tone never modulated.
