This is an iconic match in the Flamengo vs. Vasco da Gama archrivalry because it was the first time that Bebeto (one of the best football forwards of all time) faced Flamengo as an adversary. He left Flamengo back in 1989 amidst a lot of controversies, with the Rubronegro accusing him of betrayal and the player saying that Flamengo was actually to blame for his departure. Bebeto, although a true legendary player for the Mengo, was labelled a traitor for decades by the fans. He would be elected South American Footballer of the year in 1989. This Vasco da Gama was undefeated and was nicknamed "SeleVasco" (a junction of the Brazil's National Team nickname Seleção + Vasco). They featured Acácio (member of the 1990 WC), Quiñónez (Ecuador legend), Mazinho (1990 WC member, 1994 WC starter and 1989 South American Footballer of the year runner-up), Luís Carlos Winck (one of the best Brazilian right defenders of the 1980s), Bismarck (a 1990 WC member and Vasco's top prospect at that time) and two other legendary players for Brazil and Flamengo: Tita (1990 WC member and also a Vasco legend) and Andrade. The Flamengo side featured two of the greatest footballers of all time, although veterans, Zico (playing his last Flamengo vs. Vasco) and Júnior. The Rubronegro also had Zé Carlos (1990 WC member), Josimar (1986 WC All-Star Team), Leonardo (PSG, Milan, São Paulo and Flamengo legend and 1994 and 1998 WC starter) and Zinho (1994 WC starter). Renato Gaúcho couldn't play this match. The starting striker for Flamengo was the hard-working junior player Bujica, surely a downgrade from Bebeto. The vascaínos mocked the flamenguistas all week because of this fact.
