The match was played behind closed doors due to expected riots and protests outside the stadium against the Bulgarian Football Union (BFU) and its poor management in the previous 18 years. As a matter of fact, there had been at least 33 police officers and 24 football fans injured in clashes on the sidelines during the match in Bulgaria's capital Sofia. The last international tournament Bulgaria participated in was Euro 2004 in Portugal and since 2005 BFU had been managed by the once-considered heroes of the nation and infamous USA '94 World Cup main players goalkeeper Bobi Mihaylov and strikers Emil Kostadinov and Yordan Lechkov.
