As the 13 most important clubs of Brazil had chosen to depart from the national championship to play their own Copa União, the Brazilian federation organised the 1987 championship with the remaining teams. However, to avoid that Copa União gathering all the attention, the federation chose to include that Copa in the "official" championship: the two finalists of the Copa União (Flamengo and Internacional) were set to play against the finalists of the "official" championship (Sport and Guarani) in a quadrangular final. But Flamengo and Internacional refused to play. Only Sport and Guarani remained to play for the most controversial national championship of Brazilian history.
