The most dominant force in Brazilian football of the 1970s (Internacional) faces the most dominant force in Brazilian football of the 1980s (Flamengo) in a historical final between two giants. Ênio Andrade is a legendary head coach in Brazil; he was famous for creating great defensive systems and it couldn't be different with his 1987 Inter. The Flamengo side, known for its offensive game, was only thinking about going to Rio de Janeiro for the 2nd leg without being defeated. Renato Gaúcho, the face of Grêmio, Inter's archrival, was the best hope for Flamengo in this match, since Zico was exhausted after a homeric battle against Atlético Mineiro in the semi-finals.
